Guises of Romanticism

June 14, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Arneis closes the 2018-2019 season with “Guises of Romanticism” a concert featuring the premiere of Stephen Dankner’s String Quartet No. 21, written for Arneis.  Dankner’s quartet hearkens to a late-romantic style and explores the conversational aspect of the string quartet genre, taking full advantage of the “liquid gold” sound that Arneis is known for. Beethoven chose the second string quartet that he composed to open the publication of his Opus 18 set of quartets as he believed that it most clearly represented his innovative style. The second movement, based on the tomb scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, can be seen as a clear indicator of the Romantic style that Beethoven would include in his works throughout his career.  Pianist Victor Cayres joins Arneis in Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A major, Op. 81, widely regarded as the epitome of Dvorak’s musical style blending elements of traditional Czech music with some of the most memorable melodies written in the late 19thcentury Romantic Style.
